Pablo Picasso:

"I have
felt my strongest artistic emotions,
when suddenly confronted with the
sublime beauty of sculptures executed
by the anonymous
artists of Africa."
|
"These works
of a religious passionate, and rigorously
logical art are the most powerful and most
beautiful things the human imagination has
ever produced.."

This
exciting 1-2 hour field trip will explore one of the largest
collections of antique ancestral and ceremonial African
artifacts found in the United States.
Housed in the
lower level of the Bundy Museum is our Picasso Meets Africa
Gallery. Unique African sculptures, lost-wax bronzes,
authentic ceremonial masks, decorative furniture, colonial
trade beads, and other one-of-a-kind items await to be
seen and experienced.
Visitors will
have the unique opportunity to study and handle these
objects. They will learn of the vital connection between
African art and the modern art movement. This is a perfect
way to reinforce African history, heritage, and culture.
The exhibit
includes a special light show that highlights the collection's
realistic setting. The authentic African context of this
gallery is unique among American museums.
These pieces
come directly from villages in central and western Africa
and are evidence of the enormous influence exerted by
African art on the Modern Art movement of the West.
This is an
exciting outing for participants young and old alike!
Tour concludes with participants making their own African
mask to take home.
Gallery tours
are $4.50 per student (group rate) and includes tour of
the Museum, Picasso Meets Africa Gallery, and the Bundy
Modern Art Gallery.
